How to Get the Most from Your Visit to the Show
A group exhibition that brings installation, painting and sculpture into the same rooms rewards a slightly different way of looking than a single-artist show. Rather than moving from wall to wall in a straight line, try walking the space once without stopping, simply noticing which pieces pull you back. Then return to those works and give each one a few unhurried minutes. Many visitors find that the conversations between neighbouring pieces, a painting's palette echoed in a nearby sculpture or an installation that reframes the work across the room, are as rewarding as the individual objects.
Looking at installations, paintings and sculpture
- Installations often depend on how you move through them. Notice sound, light and scale, and consider how your own presence changes the piece.
- Paintings reveal different qualities at different distances. Step back to take in composition and colour, then move closer to see brushwork, layering and surface texture.
- Sculpture is meant to be seen in the round. Walk all the way around a work where the layout allows, and watch how shadows and sightlines shift.
Wall labels and the checklist at the front desk usually give titles, materials and dates. Materials in particular can open up a work: knowing whether something is cast, carved, found or fabricated often changes how you read it. If something puzzles you, gallery staff are generally happy to talk about the artists and their intentions, so don't hesitate to ask.
A few practical notes
Chelsea galleries tend to be quietest on weekday mornings, which is a good time to look closely without crowds. Please don't touch the artwork unless a piece explicitly invites it, and check with staff before taking photographs, as policies can vary from work to work. Before you come, see our visiting information for directions and access details, and if one of the featured artists catches your eye, you can learn more about their practice on our artists page. Past presentations are collected under Exhibitions for anyone curious about how the program has evolved.
