How Our Exhibition Programme Takes Shape

Every exhibition at the gallery begins long before the walls are painted and the lights are angled. Most shows grow out of ongoing conversations with artists, often over many studio visits, where we look at work in progress and talk about what a body of work needs in order to be seen at its best. Some artists arrive with a finished series; others use the exhibition date as a horizon that shapes new work. Either way, the aim is the same: a show that feels coherent, considered and true to the artist's intentions.

Solo shows, group shows and everything between

Our calendar mixes focused solo presentations with group exhibitions built around a shared idea, material or way of working. A solo show lets visitors follow one artist's thinking across a room, noticing how a motif shifts or a technique evolves. Group shows work differently, setting pieces side by side so that unexpected echoes and contrasts emerge. We find that alternating between the two keeps the programme lively and gives returning visitors a reason to look again.

Getting the most from a visit

Chelsea rewards slow looking. A few suggestions for making the most of an exhibition:

  • Read the exhibition text after a first walk-through. Seeing the work with fresh eyes before reading about it often leads to more personal responses.
  • Ask questions. Gallery staff are happy to talk about materials, processes and the ideas behind a show.
  • Come back. Light, mood and company all change how work is experienced, and a second visit often reveals details missed the first time.

Before you set out, check our visiting information for practical details, and see what is on the walls now on the current show page. To learn more about the people behind the work, browse our artists, many of whom return to the programme over the years as their practice develops.
