Exploring the Plaza and Linking It to a Chelsea Gallery Walk
The Public Square sits at the centre of the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan's Far West Side, between the office towers, the shops at 20 Hudson Yards and The Shed, the arts centre known for its movable outer shell. Its best-known landmark is the Vessel, Thomas Heatherwick's honeycomb-like structure of interlocking staircases. Planted areas, seating and open paving make the plaza a natural pause point, and temporary sculpture or installations appear there from time to time. Because programming changes, check the Hudson Yards and The Shed websites before you go if you want to see something specific.
Walking from the plaza to the galleries
One of the easiest ways to pair the plaza with indoor art is the High Line. The elevated park has a northern entrance close to Hudson Yards and runs south above the western edge of Chelsea. Along the way you pass works commissioned through High Line Art, the park's public art programme, and you can take one of several staircases down into the gallery blocks of West 20s streets near Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. A slow walk with a few stops fits easily into an afternoon.
Practical tips
- Getting there: the 7 train terminates at 34 St–Hudson Yards, right beside the plaza, and several crosstown buses serve the area.
- Timing: many Chelsea galleries are closed on Sundays and Mondays and open late morning on other days, so plan the gallery part of your visit for midweek or Saturday.
- Weather: the plaza and the High Line are exposed to wind off the Hudson, so dress for it in colder months.
- Pacing: start at the plaza in the morning, walk the High Line south, then spend the afternoon in the galleries while daylight is still good for outdoor works.
