Planning a day around the neighborhood

Chelsea rewards visitors who plan a loose route rather than a fixed itinerary. Most of the places listed here sit within walking distance of one another on Manhattan's West Side, so it is easy to combine a gallery visit with a museum, a stretch of park and a meal without ever needing a cab.

A walkable west side loop

Many people start at the southern end, around the Whitney Museum of American Art in the Meatpacking District, then climb onto the High Line and walk north above the streets. The elevated park runs through the heart of the gallery district, and stairways along the way drop you onto the West 20s, where blocks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues are lined with galleries large and small, including Gagosian on West 24th Street. Continue north and the High Line ends near Hudson Yards, which makes a natural finishing point. Chelsea Market, on Ninth Avenue, is a convenient stop for food at almost any stage of the walk.

Further afield

Not every listing is around the corner. Dia Beacon is in the Hudson Valley town of Beacon, a train ride north of the city, and is best treated as a separate day trip for its large-scale works from the 1960s onward. The Lower East Side Printshop, despite its name, is listed with a Midtown West address, so check its current location and visiting arrangements before you go. The Rubin Museum's programming has changed in recent years, so it is worth confirming what is open to the public.
