Preparing for Your Press Preview

A press preview is a quieter, more focused way to see an exhibition before the public opening. Without the crowds of an opening night, writers, critics and photographers can spend time with the work, study the installation, and ask questions about how the show came together. To make the most of that time, a little preparation on both sides goes a long way.

What to include beyond the basics

Alongside your name, publication and intended coverage, it helps to mention the format you have in mind: a review, a short listing, an artist profile, a studio-practice feature or a photo-led piece. Let us know whether you hope to speak with an artist, whether you plan to bring a photographer or video equipment, and roughly when your piece is likely to run. These details help us decide what materials to prepare and whether an artist conversation is realistic.

Materials you can expect

Depending on the exhibition, press visitors are usually offered a checklist of works with titles, dates, media and dimensions, along with an exhibition text and artist biographies. Approved installation images and image credit lines are typically shared after the visit. Please always use the credits supplied with each image, and check with us before cropping or altering any artwork reproduction.

Etiquette during the visit

  • Arrive at the agreed time, as previews are often scheduled around installation work.
  • Ask before photographing works that are still being hung or lit.
  • Treat any embargo on publication dates as binding.
  • Quotes from artists should be checked for accuracy if you are unsure of wording.

For background on the current programme, see the current show and our list of represented artists. Earlier press coverage is gathered on the press page, which can be useful context when planning a story about an artist's development over several exhibitions.
