How to Use These Guides
The guides collected here fall into three loose groups, and it helps to know which one you need before you start reading. The first is for visitors: people planning an afternoon in Chelsea, coming to an opening for the first time, or hoping to hear an artist speak about their work. The second is for collectors, whether you are considering a first purchase or adding to a collection you have built over years. The third is for artists, exhibitors and press, who deal with the practical side of moving, insuring and presenting work.
If you are visiting
Start with the etiquette and gallery walk notes. Chelsea's galleries are concentrated in the blocks west of Tenth Avenue, roughly between West 18th and West 28th Streets, and many are on upper floors of former industrial buildings. Wear comfortable shoes, allow more time than you expect, and remember that most galleries are free to enter. Many close on Sundays and Mondays, and hours often change in summer, so check before you set out. Our visit page covers getting to the gallery itself.
If you are collecting
Buying art involves more than choosing a work you love. Framing, lighting and insurance all affect how a piece ages and how well it holds its value. Archival materials, UV-filtering glazing and light kept away from direct sun are simple decisions that protect paper and pigment for decades. For anything involving valuation, tax or coverage terms, talk to a qualified appraiser, insurer or adviser. The guides offer a starting point, not professional advice.
If you are an artist or writer
Shipping and fair preparation reward planning. Large canvases usually need custom crating, and condition reports made before and after transit save disputes later. Journalists and critics will find preview requests easiest to arrange well ahead of an opening, when there is time to provide images and background material.
These guides are updated as practices change. To see the work they relate to, browse the current show or look back through past exhibitions.
